How Blind Spot Monitoring Detects Danger
The flashing yellow warning lights when a car changes lanes are actually part of an intelligent safety system. Mainstream solutions use 24GHz millimeter-wave radar or wide-angle cameras to continuously scan a 3-5 meter area behind the vehicle. When a vehicle from an adjacent lane enters the monitoring zone, the system calculates the relative speed using the Doppler effect. If a collision risk is detected (e.g., a vehicle rapidly approaching from behind), the system triggers the LED lights on the rearview mirror to flash, reminding the driver to stop changing lanes.
Three Intelligent Modes of Light Warning
Different automakers have unique designs for their warning logic:
Basic Mode: The light remains constantly on when a vehicle is detected; it flashes rapidly when the turn signal is activated for a lane change.
Predictive Mode: Provides tiered warnings based on the speed of vehicles behind; slower vehicles illuminate only one side of the light, while faster vehicles alternate between flashing lights.
Enhanced Mode: Combined with seat vibration or audible alerts, the light color changes from yellow to red depending on the level of danger.
Technological Evolution and Safety Value
This technology, first introduced by Volvo in 1995, has now evolved into a camera + radar fusion solution. The new system can identify narrow-body vehicles such as motorcycles, with a false alarm rate of less than 0.3%. Data shows that vehicles equipped with this feature experience approximately 40% fewer lane-changing accidents, with particularly noticeable effects in rainy or foggy weather. In the future, it may be combined with AR navigation to project virtual warning frames directly onto the windshield.
